Many people suffer for years from pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control the movement in your jaw. A TMJ disorder (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), is a disorder of the jaw, nerves and muscles due to an injury or misalignment of the temporomandibular joint. This joint is at the connection point between your jaw bone and your skull. When injured or misaligned, there can be inflammation of the soft tissues in this region. This inflammation can result in many of the common symptoms associated with this condition.
What Are The Causes Of TMJ Syndrome?
Although TMJ syndrome is not completely understood, there are several factors which could contribute to the tightening of the muscles and their dysfunction, which characterize this condition. Because of this, no dentist can officially refer to themselves as a specialist in this area. We are still unsure whether some of these causes are directly involved with TMJ syndrome, or if they are some sort of result of the disorder itself. Certain causes may include:
- Teeth Grinding
- Poor Posture
- Stress
- Misalignment
- Injury
-Arthritis
-Other Inflammatory Disorders
While these are some of the more common factors which could be related to this condition, there are some others, however, that many people may miss.
Conditions which may be often overlooked include sleeping disorders such as sleep apnea. TMJ syndrome is more often referred to as "The Great Impostor", because the symptoms can often radiate far from where the source of the problem lies. You may experience pain in your forehead, behind your eyes, temples, ears, and jaws.
What Causes A TMJ Disorder & Are There Any Treatments Available?
Pain can be caused by trauma such as a blow to the jaw, or even a dental restoration that may hit too hard when you bite down.
The narrow upper airway space can also be linked to TMJ disorders. If the jaw is clenched while asleep, or even during the day, the chronic muscle tension in your jaw can put stress on your TMJ.
Treatments from any health professional can never be guaranteed. However, there was a study done which reported that almost 90% of over 2,000 patients have had success from jaw-related treatments for headaches. Dr. Hassoun’s patients have received similar success rates.
What Can Dr. Hassoun Do For You?
When you are looking for a dentist with significant experience in diagnosing and treating TMJ and sleep disorders, it can be difficult, especially since no dentist is technically allowed to call themselves a TMJ specialist Melbourne patients can visit. So, you will want to look for a dentist such as Dr. Hassoun who has invested hundreds, even thousands, of hours in attaining proper training and hands-on experience with these disorders.
Dr. Hassoun has been successfully assessed and treated hundreds of patients with TMJ and sleep disorders since 2005.
